Emergency Blocked Drain: What to Do and Who to Call on the Central Coast

A completely blocked drain is one of the most stressful home emergencies. Toilets won’t flush. Water is backing up into the shower. You do not know who to call or what to do first. This guide covers the immediate steps and tells you what the resolution process looks like on the Central Coast.

Quick answer (BLUF)

If your toilet, shower or laundry is backing up: stop using water, check the outdoor gully trap, call a licensed Central Coast drain contractor immediately. Most Central Coast drain contractors offer same-day or emergency response. Do not use chemical drain cleaners on a completely blocked drain. After the blockage is cleared, a CCTV inspection will show whether a structural fix (relining) is needed to prevent recurrence.

Step 1: Stop using water immediately

The first and most important step. If the sewer main is blocked, every flush and every litre of water you send down a drain is backing up somewhere in the system. It might overflow through the gully trap in the garden (the system’s designed relief valve, better there than in your bathroom). But in a severe blockage, continued water use risks overflow inside the house.

  • Stop flushing the toilet
  • Do not run the laundry or dishwasher
  • Avoid running taps beyond what is necessary
  • Do not pour chemicals down the drain, they cannot get past a complete blockage and may damage the pipe

Step 2: Check the outdoor gully trap

Find your outdoor gully trap. It is usually a square or round fitting set in the garden near the laundry or bathroom, with a removable lid. Gully traps are designed to overflow first when the sewer backs up, it is better for sewage to come up in the garden than inside the house.

If the gully trap lid is overflowing or full: this confirms a complete downstream blockage. The problem is in the main sewer drain, downstream of where the house drains converge.

If the gully trap is empty and clear: the blockage may be in an individual fixture’s branch pipe (just the toilet connection, just the kitchen drain) rather than the main.

Step 3: Check whether it is sewer or stormwater

If the issue is garden flooding with no internal backup during rain: see our stormwater vs sewer guide for the diagnostic steps.

If toilets and showers are backing up: sewer.

If it only happens in rain and internal drainage is normal: stormwater.

Step 4: Call a licensed Central Coast drain contractor

Search for a licensed drain contractor on the Central Coast, look for “blocked drain Central Coast” or “emergency plumber Gosford” depending on your location. Most established contractors offer:

  • Same-day response for urgent blockages
  • Emergency/after-hours call-out for complete sewer failures (expect premium rates outside normal hours)
  • Hydro-jet clearing equipment that can resolve the majority of blockages in one visit

When you call, have ready:

  • Your address and suburb
  • The nature of the problem (toilet backed up, multiple fixtures, garden overflow)
  • Whether the gully trap is overflowing
  • Approximate age of the property (helps the contractor anticipate pipe type)

Step 5: What the contractor will do

The contractor will arrive with a hydro-jetter and typically a CCTV camera. The process:

  1. Assess the access point: Locate the inspection shaft or gully trap nearest to the blockage
  2. Jet the blockage clear: High-pressure water jet through the drain. Most residential blockages clear in 30-60 minutes.
  3. Confirm flow is restored: Water flows freely before the contractor packs up
  4. Optionally inspect: If you request (or if the contractor recommends), a CCTV run immediately after clearing shows what caused the blockage and whether it is likely to recur

After the contractor leaves, your drain is flowing again. But if the blockage was caused by root infiltration, a cracked joint or structural defect, the same issue will recur.

After the emergency: the two-path choice

Once the immediate emergency is resolved, you face a decision:

Path A: Watch and wait Accept that the drain may block again, plan to clear it again when it does. Appropriate if: this is the first blockage, the property is less than 20 years old, and the contractor did not note any structural findings during the clearing.

Path B: CCTV inspection and assessment Book a follow-up CCTV inspection (often can be done the same day or within a day or two). The inspection shows exactly what caused the blockage and whether relining is warranted. Appropriate if: the property is pre-1990, you have had prior blockages, or the contractor noted root material during jetting.

Most experienced contractors on the Central Coast will recommend a CCTV inspection after the second or any subsequent blockage. If they noted significant root material or unusual resistance during jetting, they may recommend it after the first occurrence.

When to call a plumber vs when to call the council

Call a licensed plumber (you pay):

  • Any blockage in the private sewer drain from the house to the connection at the property boundary

May be Council or water authority responsibility:

  • If your drain appears to be clear but there is a problem at the connection to the public main
  • If multiple properties in the street are experiencing simultaneous drain problems (main sewer blockage)
  • If there is sewage coming up from a council pit or public infrastructure

In practice, the water authority (Sydney Water for most of the Central Coast) is responsible for the public sewer mains. If the problem turns out to be in the public main, Sydney Water rectifies it at no cost to you. Your licensed plumber can help confirm the boundary of the problem before committing to extensive private clearing work.

After-hours and public holiday surcharges on the Central Coast

Emergency drain clearing outside normal hours carries a premium. Typical rate structures:

  • Normal hours (Mon, Fri, 7 AM, 5 PM): standard rates
  • After hours (Mon, Fri evening, Saturday): 25-50% premium
  • Sundays and public holidays: 50-100% premium

Christmas, New Year period is the peak demand period on the Central Coast. Holiday homes are all occupied, maximum usage, and drain contractors are busy. If you are opening a holiday property in this period and encounter a drain problem, expect longer wait times and possible peak-period pricing. This is one strong argument for a pre-season drain flush and inspection before the holiday period starts.

FAQs

Will my home insurance cover emergency drain clearing?

Many home insurance policies cover emergency plumbing, including blocked drains, under the home cover or emergency assistance rider. Check your specific policy, coverage varies significantly. Emergency drain clearing is a common claim and many insurers have preferred provider contractors.

How long does emergency drain clearing take?

For a standard residential main sewer blockage accessible from the gully trap or inspection shaft, clearing typically takes 30-60 minutes. More complex situations (buried access, severe collapse) take longer. The contractor should give you a time estimate before starting.

My drain cleared itself overnight, do I still need to call someone?

A blockage that partially resolves overnight is a very partial resolution. The obstruction has reduced enough for slow flow but it is still there. Left unaddressed, it will completely block again. Book a clearing and inspection within a few days.

What is the gully trap and where do I find it?

The gully trap is an access point in the sewer system, a ceramic or PVC fitting set into the ground at grade, usually in the garden near the bathroom or laundry side of the house. It has a removable lid. Its function is as an overflow point, if the sewer backs up, water overflows from the gully trap rather than from inside the house. Finding it before an emergency is a worthwhile 5-minute exercise.
