Most drain relining questions are about the main pipe run: the sewer line from your house to the boundary, or the stormwater run from a yard pit to the street. But a meaningful share of the defects found on CCTV inspection aren’t in the main line at all, they’re at the junction, the T-shaped or Y-shaped connection where a branch line (a kitchen waste, a laundry connection, a second bathroom) joins the main pipe. Junctions are a common failure point, and there’s a specific relining technique built for them: the top-hat liner.
Why junctions fail more often than straight pipe runs
A junction is a structurally awkward point in any drainage system. Two pipes meet at an angle, which means more joint surface, more opportunity for mortar or seal breakdown, and a geometry that’s inherently harder to keep watertight than a straight length of pipe. In older Central Coast homes with terracotta or AC cement drainage, junctions were typically formed with a separate fitting mortared or cemented into the main pipe, another joint, another potential failure point, on top of whatever joints exist along the straight sections either side.
Tree roots exploit this. A junction with any degree of joint deterioration is often the first place roots find their way into a system, because the fitting joint tends to open before the straight-pipe joints along either side do. On CCTV inspection, it’s common to see root intrusion concentrated at a junction even when the rest of the pipe run, upstream and downstream, is in comparatively good condition.
Top-hat liners: what they actually are
A top-hat liner is named for its shape: a short cylindrical liner section with a flared collar at one end, resembling a top hat in cross-section when installed. The flared collar seats into the branch connection while the cylindrical body extends a short distance into the main pipe, so the finished liner covers the junction itself and a short length of pipe on both sides of it.
Like standard CIPP liner material, a top-hat is a felt or fibreglass sleeve saturated with resin (epoxy is standard for sewer applications, as covered in our resin types comparison guide) and installed using an inversion process specific to junction geometry. The liner is fed into position from the main pipe access point, then inflated so the flared collar presses into the branch line opening while the body presses against the main pipe wall either side. Once in position, the resin is cured, using UV light, steam or ambient cure depending on the product and access, exactly the same principle as a full-length liner, just shaped for a junction rather than a straight run.
The result is a single continuous, joint-free surface across what used to be two separate pipe joints (the branch-to-fitting joint and the fitting-to-main joint), sealed as one structural unit.
Top-hat repair vs full-length relining vs robotic reinstatement
It’s worth being clear about three related but distinct things, because they’re often confused:
Top-hat / junction patch repair targets a defect at the junction itself, when CCTV shows root intrusion, cracking or joint failure specifically at the connection point, and the main pipe run either side is otherwise sound. Full-length relining installs a continuous liner along the entire main pipe run. Where that run has one or more branch junctions along it, those junctions are inevitably covered by the liner as it passes over them, whether or not the junction itself had a defect.
Robotic junction reinstatement is the step that follows full-length relining when junctions have been covered by the main liner. A remote-controlled cutter, guided by camera, is sent into the cured liner to cut the junction connection back open from inside, restoring flow from the branch line into the main pipe. The practical distinction: robotic reinstatement re-opens a connection that a full liner has closed over. A top-hat liner does the opposite, it seals a specific junction that’s currently a defect, without needing to touch the rest of the pipe run at all.
When a top-hat is the right call
A junction patch makes sense when CCTV shows the defect is genuinely isolated to the connection point: root intrusion entering specifically at the branch fitting, a cracked or displaced junction collar, or a leaking seal at a T- or Y-junction on a pipe that is otherwise structurally sound along its length. This is common in homes where one particular branch line, often an older bathroom or laundry addition, was connected into the main sewer at a different time from the rest of the system and with a lower-quality fitting.
It’s the wrong call when the junction defect is one of several problems along the run. If CCTV shows root intrusion at the junction and at two or three joints further along the main pipe, a top-hat solves one problem and leaves the others to fail on their own timeline, usually within a few years. In that situation, full-length relining (which will cover the junction as part of the overall liner, then have it robotically reinstated) is the better long-term outcome, because it addresses everything in a single job with a single warranty.
Materials and installation considerations
Because a top-hat liner has to seat correctly into a specific fitting geometry, sizing matters more than it does for a straight pipe section. Junctions vary in angle (45-degree Y-junctions and 90-degree T-junctions both exist in older Central Coast drainage) and in branch pipe diameter, commonly 50-100mm for household branch lines connecting into a 100-150mm main. A correctly fitted top-hat needs to match both dimensions closely enough that the flared collar seats fully into the branch opening without folding or bridging, gaps in the resin-to-pipe contact that would undermine the seal.
Epoxy resin is the standard specification here for the same reasons it’s preferred for full-length sewer relining: strong adhesion to old terracotta and AC cement substrates, good chemical resistance to sewage and hydrogen sulphide, and a long expected service life. A well-installed top-hat carries the same structural warranty as a full-length liner section.

Junction patch repairs on the Central Coast typically run $2,500-$4,000, depending on access, junction angle and whether the branch line itself needs any preparatory jetting. This sits in a similar bracket to a standard point repair, reflecting the setup and access work involved rather than any difference in the resin or curing process itself.
